Peter rip discusses the idea that AJAX and the web is the future of such applications as word processing, because they are really about communication. But I wonder. Certainly we use web services in Element55, but they’re machine-to-machine: the user experience and ability to be productive is constant whether they are connected to the network or not. Blogger also has an example of this: rather than trying to bring advanced word processing into Blogger, they have a toolbar for Microsoft Word to let me create and modify posts through the latter.

I think we will see greater success from businesses that go to the mountain, rather than betting that the reverse will happen.
