Bookmarklets
I think delicious may have pioneered them, but lots of services are starting to use javascript-enhanced “links” that can be dragged to one’s favorites as a means of interacting with a web service. For example, Bloglines lets me subscribe to a feed by just clicking on the “sub with bloglines” in my favorites when I am on a site that I like. Simple.
I wonder if they are going to be over-used, as many services are offering them now. I wonder if there is a business for a “bookmarklet consolidator” that would subscribe, tag, rate all at the same time. Or, if this is really going to be a thing, offer a one-stop-shopping toolbar. This is where Google could crush many of these services, by just adding to the toolbar. Then again, maybe MS will do this with IE7.
Frankly, I kind of hope so, because bookmarklets have drawbacks. Now I wonder whether the firms that currently rely on bookmarklets should be doing deals with the toolbar vendors (google, yahoo, msft) to get their services plugged into a button.
Could be interesting.

Brendan Eich of Netscape pioneered them in ‘95 while the term was coined and popularized in ‘98
