Cranky
My last post was kinda curmudgeonly. A PR agency went to the trouble of surveying members of the tech entrepreneur community and publishing the results for free, but I focused on what was not asked, rather than lauding what was shared. The agency is certainly in it for the attention received, but they still deserve credit for their approach of getting by giving.
I had a similar response to Jeff Bussgang’s article which criticized legendary VC and tech pundit Howard Andersen’s column on why he left the tech VC business. I thought that Bussgang was exhibiting sour grapes, and expressing a testosterone-laden emotional reaction (Me wolf, him sheep!) to a pretty rational argument.
But then I realized that I would just be adding to the crankiness. And once you start down the crank path, forever will it dominate your destiny.
So let me instead say this. Hooray to Bussgang for sharing his perspective on why tech VC is still a business worth being in, and how to segment within it. Hooray for the agency for starting to put some numbers behind what’s in our heads, and publishing their results. And hooray to Andersen for giving some more insight into the economics of the financial world we startups coexist with.
And a reminder to myself that when I see gray, I should seek silver.
