Should I Keep raydeck.com Open?
At a recent meeting, a fellow from a potential partner firm mentioned that they had seen my “blog.” (I hate that word, but if the shoe fits…) The readership is so small, and the link love is so low, that I hadn’t much considered that I would have a readership at this stage. But google finds all, and caches all, so what’s done is done.
My question is whether to keep this journal mostly public going forward. What do I get out of it being public?
- I get to meet people I otherwise would not.
- I evolve my thinking on issues that are strategic to my business, but are not part of my urgent day-to-day.
- I get assistance from others who correct or add value to my musings through their own insights in the form of comments.
- I offer some small assistance (or at least commiseration) to my fellow entrepreneurs.
- When I write here, my thoughts go through a filter of making sense outside of my own head - an issue forced when writing in a public forum.
- I get to “talk” about these issues, and I am overly fond of my own voice (or it’s written equivalent).
And what is the downside?
- It gives strangers - and maybe competitors or those negotiating with me - a window into my thinking.
- It might give the impression of distraction, since I talk about subjects that are tangential to the core of my business (at least publically).
- Every word written here will be cached by the big archiver in the sky, and I might reap what I sow in that regard with my own words used “against me” at some future date.
At some level, this is asking the question “why blog?” (ugh) But rather than addressing the broad question, I’ll stay focused on this particular case.
I welcome feedback from my small readership on question, and how I might better handle keeping this open in a matter that is beneficial to the half-dozen or so people that actually read it - including me!
