Tag Clouds and Information Design
I am becoming enamored of the design aspects of a tag cloud. I like the way it makes information easier to find - sorting tags alphabetically, but using the size of the text to denote the frequency/importance. A mouseover tooltip adds a third dimension of explanation as needed. But if there are few enough tags, one can easily search for relevant content, and find out what is big.
For me, the cloud as a means of information design is more important than the idea of tags. The use of text and typography to convey quantitative data is clever, and dead simple. Very much my speed as a display mechanism, and opens up ways to convey more than just text with type.
