But really, the tools - CSS - are ridiculous. There is a lot of power there, but if the metaphor for a web page is - wait for it - a page, why is layout so difficult and counter-intuitive? CSS is complicated enough that the response on graphics sites is “the problem is that amateurs want to do design themselves.” Maybe, but what we really want to do is implement design ourselves, and in many cases that is made easy. Pagemaker and the sophisicated document editing afforded by MS Word changed things for a lot of us. Bad design is not the problem, at least not yet - the inability to realize that design through simple code is.
